All About Us

Braveheart Tamaskan started after much research & devotion to this beautiful breed.

Jon & Nic randomly came across the Tamaskan dog in 2012, but it was 2019 before a Tamaskan puppy joined the family. Located in Pennsylvania, the kennel name is a nod to where Nic hailed from - having moved from Scotland in 2011.

Caledonia (Callie) joined our pack from Hawthorne Tamaskan's Coffee Litter (Hawthorne Cappuccino). Pending all health testing, she will be the founding dog of Braveheart Tamaskan with breeding planned for Autumn 2022.

We are dedicated to breeding the best animals we can, adhering to the ITR standard. We are committed to help educate their new owners and ensure these precious pups get the love, care and attention they deserve.

*Oct 2022: The week we planned to travel to breed Callie, approval was revoked due to a health concern in one of Callie's siblings. We were/are saddened by this but commit to the health of this breed. Therefore Braveheart Tamaskan will remain in name, and we are considering if we should start this journey again in due time. Callie is a beloved part of our pack & maybe we'll add a new pack member in a year or 2*

First & foremost - thanks for visiting our page, we're glad you're here!

With this breed, please do your research. Be sure to know the best breed for you before you consider any puppy.

Bringing a puppy home is an exciting thing! However, Tamaskans are not the breed for everyone. They are considered to be an arctic breed (like huskies and malamutes) so they do have a pack mentality. They do well in family homes & those with other dogs
.

You should only get a Tamaskan from a registered breeder - a list of which can be found on the ITR website (linked below).

Tams are NOT for first time dog owners, they require time & attention.
An ideal home has many facets, but a primary one would be an owner who is home with them or can take them to work.

About Tamaskans

FOOD

We rotate through Purina Pro Plan flavors and also supplement with whole foods such as chicken, beef, sweet potato, corn & hidden green veggies... She's picky about anything green! Callie LOVES treats from our local butcher - such as pigs ears or beef shins. (Never cooked bones, which can splinter)

TOYS

Tamaskan Dogs are fairly hard on toys. We recommend toys of the hard rubber type such as Kongs, as well as Nylabones & Callie's personal fav - natural antlers. Squeakers are usually destroyed quickly--but they do enjoy them. Please keep an eye on your dog so that they don't ingest the squeaker.

TRAINING

We highly recommend positive reinforcement training. Please consult a professional regarding training and especially for behavior modification for your dog.

EXERCISE

Tams are smart - training & keeping them mentally occupied is key. Callie loves treat-dispensing puzzles, hide & seek & the which hand game. Physically, she loves long walks or going out for a run with Jon.

SAFETY
I would highly encourage every dog owner to invest in a fluorescent orange dog vest - this protects them from being mis-identified. Let's face it, we love this breed because they look like a wild-type dog. So much so that they could easily be mistaken for a coyote or wolf. Play it safe and make it clear to everyone whom you might meet in the fields and woods that this animal running around is indeed someone's pet!

Getting a Puppy

At Braveheart Tamaskan, we continue to care about our animals long after they leave us. As such, it’s our strict policy to only sell to individuals; we will never sell to pet shops or brokers.

To make sure our animals get the fur-ever home they deserve, we carefully interview all potential owners. Please find us on Good Dog for more details & preliminary application form.
